Academic Success for Preschoolers
Most learning is through repetition. Training preschoolers takes lots of patience. However, the process can be fun and rewarding. Below are a few examples of concrete concepts that parents can teach their preschoolers. Also included are ways parents can provide repetition in teaching these concepts through everyday activities.
Counting and Grouping
Have your child help you set the dinner table and put all the spoons together, then put all the cups together, and then put all the plates together. This helps to improve grouping skills. Then have your child count how many spoons, then count how many cups, then count how many plates. This will help to develop counting and language skills. Not to mention good quality parent-child interaction.

Colors
Have your child help you with the laundry. Let your child sort the clothing by pants, shirt, blouse, etc. This helps to develop sorting skills. Then have your child tell you the color of each piece of clothing. This activity will help your child recognize various color schemes.
Another activity is to have similar items of different colors. For example get 3 balls with colors red, green, and blue. Identify each ball by its color. When the child plays with the balls you can say something like "John has the blue ball", or "please give me the red ball".

Shapes
Have your child describe each piece of food they eat, for example Cheerios are round like a circle, pizza has a triangle shape, egg has an oval shape, banana has a crescent shape like the moon, most doors shape like a rectangle, most food cans are shaped like a cylinder, and of course an ice cream cone has a cone shape. Some waffles have a square shape or a heart shape.
